Siren’s Lament is instantmiso’s second Webtoon series about a teenage girl, Lyra, who has been transformed into a partial siren due to Poseidon's Curse. On the night of a full moon, all those with a broken heart hear the siren’s call — they dangerously beautiful singing of the broken-hearted creatures of the sea. In order for a siren to reclaim their lives as a human being, they needed to transfer their curse onto another broken-hearted person.
After feeling rejected by her crush, Lyra finds herself compelled to jump into the ocean after standing on a cliff. Once in the water, she locked lips with a siren. Instead of the curse transferring to her completely, she had second thoughts soon into the interaction, creating a dilemma for both parties. Lyra and her new fishy friends could turn into both humans and sirens. But, there was a twist: they needed to either break the curse or have one of them take on the full burden of the curse, or they would both be transformed into sirens.
There are two seasons to this hilariously dramatic webtoon. Right from the beginning, the reader is transported to the sleepy seaside town Lyra calls home. Our hearts are stolen by Ian and his antics, and before we knew it, we were rooting for the people we believed least deserving of our sympathy. It has been quite some time since I’ve witnessed this level of depth to a fairytale retelling and comic series.
Instantmiso knew how to balance the serious and light-hearted tones quite well. In addition, each episode length is long enough to keep a reader satisfied until they can read further. So, if you enjoy beautiful art style, original music, an original story, and a fun ocean adventure, I strongly recommend giving this Webtoon a shot.
When I first saw this Webtoon, I was enthralled by the stunning visuals the creator provided. It was clear to tell that she had found and further developed her drawing style since her first series. In the future, I think I’ll quickly pick up anything created by this author. She’s become an instant-read for me, and a lot of that is due to Siren’s Lament!
